Indie creature-collecting roguelike Dicefolk has gotten some positive steam this week following release on February 27. In it you use magical dice to build up your team of mythical creatures—Chimeras—in order to defeat a mysterious evil threat. There’s a demo if you want to try it for yourself.

Just watching the trailer lets you know that Dicefolk has one big thing going for it above many other roguelike deck-or-dice-builders: It’s made up of some quite nice, quite traditional-looking, art and animation.

The game itself is double-layered, with a node map to traverse and explore coupled with battles between your Chimeras and enemies. For all that it’s a dice-based game there is some customization here as you tweak and change the faces on the dice and pick which monsters to recruit in the first place. You choose the order that your creatures take action in combat, too, which lets you have some tactical decisions during the flow of battle.

The promenade is a bit bare at the moment, but its distinctive archways and amphitheater-like layout are immediately striking⁠—Waukeen’s Promenade always felt like someone turned a sports arena into an open-air market, fitting for the mercantile city of Athkatla. It has been a while since a traditional roguelike RPG caught my eye, but no longer: Path of Achra is a dark fantasy game of an ancient earth where gods and sorcerers battle with mighty warriors and heroes. You’re an adventurer on the path through Achra seeking the Obelisk beyond, which you do via a series of little mini-roguelike dungeon areas, each small enough to fit on a single screen.

Self-described by the developer as a “broken build sandbox,” Path of Achra has that special sauce that lets you really enjoy mixing and matching all kinds of weird starting classes, origins, and gods—all of which give you powers—with its ten paths of magic and abilities. That’s stuff  like elemental magics, but also necromancy, astral powers, psychic abilities, and blood magic.

Like most PlayStation first-party games, God of War Ragnarök requires a PSN account. A fact that we’ve known about since the State of Play earlier this year, alongside a short blog post that mentions this in italics at the bottom of the page. But just because it hasn’t come as a surprise doesn’t mean that players are happy with this outcome.

God of War: Ragnarök is currently at a “mixed” review status on Steam, thanks to some players review bombing the game. “PSN requirement is ridiculous,” one review says. “It’s a shame. I’m a big fan of the God of War series, but I’m not on board with this ransom approach.”

While you might be sick of all the live service games that swarmed us last year, there’s every chance you’ve played at least one one for a substantial amount of time—Fortnite, Destiny 2, Apex Legends—these games are popular for a reason.

The fact remains that if a company can find the golden goose, it’ll be set for years if not decades.
